What is tire mounting paste?
Tire mounting paste is a lubricating compound used during the installation of tires onto wheels to ensure a smooth and secure fit. It helps reduce friction between the tire bead and the wheel rim, making it easier to mount the tire while preventing damage to the rubber or rim.
Main functions
1. Lubricate the contact surface between the tire lip and the wheel hub
Help the tire lip slide easily into the wheel hub groove to avoid damage to the tire or wheel hub caused by forced installation.
2. Assist tire inflation and sealing
When inflating, the lubricating paste can temporarily fill the tiny gap, help the tire lip quickly fit the wheel hub and form a seal.
3. Prevent corrosion
Some products contain anti-rust ingredients to protect aluminum alloy wheels from oxidation.
4. Compatible with rubber materials
Designed specifically for tire rubber, it will not cause aging or cracking (ordinary grease may corrode rubber).
Common ingredients
- Water-soluble polymers (such as cellulose gel)
- Glycerin or plant-based lubricants (environmentally friendly)
- Rust-inhibiting additives (for metal wheel protection)
Applicable scenarios
- Tire installation/removal (especially vacuum tires or low-pressure tires)
- Bicycle, motorcycle, car tires (including TPMS sensor hubs)
- Tire repair shops or DIY users
Substitutes (temporary use)
Safe substitutes:
- Diluted detergent and water (need to be wiped thoroughly to avoid residue that may cause slippage)
- Special tire mounting fluid (such as RuGlyde, 3M™ Tire Mounting Paste)
Do not use:
- Petroleum-based lubricants such as motor oil and butter (corrode rubber)
- Solvents such as WD-40 (destroy tire sealing)
How to use
- Clean the wheel rim and tire bead.
- Apply a small amount of lubricant to the contact surface between the tire bead and the wheel rim.
- Inflate the tire after installation and check whether the tire bead fits evenly.
- Wipe off excess lubricant to avoid residue.
Notes
- Excessive use may cause the tire to slip after inflation (apply sparingly as needed).
- Select a non-corrosive formula, especially for aluminum wheels.
Tire mounting paste is commonly used in automotive shops and by DIY enthusiasts when changing tires. Proper lubrication ensures the bead seats correctly, reducing the risk of leaks or bead damage.
